Great app ruined by iOS 11
Oct 26, 2017zach03 This app feels limited after changes made by Apple. My other app for my Linksys WiFi can’t even open. Great. Sign the petition. Tell Apple they overstepped. This is still a good tool to check, and see if anyone else is on your router. . .

iOS parental control restrictions and Android parental controls
Also available are the parental controls within the device. iPhones have a number of restriction settings available that I’ve written about in detail on the site. Android phones have some options with more available from the Google Play store.
So you can see there are a lot of options, the key being finding the one that gives you the information you need at a reasonable price. I don’t really like the idea of “spying”, I like the term “monitoring” and I think it makes sense as a parent to have an idea of what’s going on, especially since so much activity happens online. And so much of what happens online, happens using a teens’ phone.

Bob, you’re not very tech savvy are you? Hide the app, these kinds of apps are most effective when hidden. All the best to you.
May 20, 2015 at 4:15 am
Bob is tech savvy.. They can easily encrypt messages and search the Internet using tor. Once these apps hit the market, kids find workarounds and trust me, there are ways around this. I think you need to be introduced to the dark net where kids talk and learn many things from other kids ALL OVER THE WORLD !
June 5, 2016 at 9:51 am
LOL….download the hidden tracker app, then lock lock out their ability to alter their settings and their ability to download apps without parental permission and you’re all set.

Why don’t you recommend jailbreaking an iphone or an ipod? Its easy to do and it can be fun for kids who can do absolutely cool things with their phone like customizing their phone. Its not illegal and it is easy and really fun if anythig breaks you just restore your phone and restore your backup and jailbreak again its fun
March 25, 2015 at 3:30 pm
Well, I don’t recommend it since it can void your warranty, updates can become problematic, devices may be more susceptible to malware, and technical skills are required. I suppose if there is an older, unused device sitting around it could be a learning opportunity, but otherwise I’m not sure it’s worth the worry. That’s just my personal take on it, I have never done so myself.
May 20, 2015 at 4:20 am
So this is one workaround ? Perhaps jail breaking or restoring disables this app?
April 21, 2015 at 5:26 am
I find MyNiño a best one to track teen. An app which is not a spy but helps parents who are often worried about their teens. This app allows tracking teen’s location when they are out of reach and even I can Geo-fence his/her location location to get an alert when they move out of Geo-fenced boundary of home or school. Tracking of Call, SMS and contacts makes it sure that teen is not connected to any suspicious people.
The best part is – its available for free and also allows to track more then one teen from a single parent account. I necessarily do not require a smartphone to track rather Parent can also track from web on PC/laptop.

I find it bizarre and disturbing that you feel the need to monitor your children as you do. You may find, that without restrictive controls that make them the laughing stock among their peers, they fare just fine and, if not, get to learn from their own mistakes along the way.
May 11, 2015 at 7:30 pm
Bizarre and disturbing are strong words! Some might find it bizarre that a parent wouldn’t monitor their children at all. As with anything else, we monitor and guide them from infancy throughout the teenage years and eventually “loosen the reins” so to speak once they are capable of doing things on their own. That works differently for each family, each parent, each child. I’m not suggesting that anyone send their kid to college to with parental controls on their phone!
June 19, 2015 at 11:00 am
Jean, you need not reply to ignorance of those who find it “bizarre” or “disturbing” to monitor children today. We are parenting. I used to be a lazy parent, allowing my child to do her own thing and calling it “learning experiences”. That is one sure way to screw a child up. My child is 14 and has no true sense of moral right and wrong. We, as adults and parents, are here to be the moral compass and example. We are to set the bar and guide them in the right direction. By monitoring their activity is the way we can see where they are going and use those things as learning experiences together with them. You go girl!!!

The realist says
July 21, 2015 at 10:41 pm
Although I trust my child to a certain extent, I have periodically checked on her communications via cell phone and computer. We can parent OUR children as well as possible, but there are predators, older men, and cyber bullying out there that we can’t protect our children from if we live in a closet called denial. Teenagers are susceptible to any number of theses things and more in this electronic age. I have personally found inappropriate/illegal stuff sent to my 16 year old and she has been inundated by content sent to her by men older than 25 and up to 30+ years old, and those are the ones I know about. I don’t want to alienate my daughter but I also don’t want her to become a victim to the many dangers that are now out there behind a keyboard. I would prefer her to write letters via snail mail and use the house phone like I did when I did 20 years ago, but with new technology comes new dangers. You never know who’s behind a keyboard in a chat room. I personally want to prevent my daughter from becoming a victim of child exploitation. I would prefer her not to LEARN the hard way. And as for GPS tracking, if she is in trouble, at least I have something to give the police. And trust me, you would be shocked at the amount of sexting that goes on. Especially when I found out he was 28. I know I was. Good luck to all parents.
January 23, 2018 at 12:56 pm
The issue has to be related to preventing sex trafficing. Many teens are snagged by sly, evil people. I agree with The realist and will begin monitoring my two daughters iPhones/iPads due to a watching the Megan Kelly show that revealed how these predators snare the vulnerable slowly and with step-by-step methods that take advantage of the underdeveloped emotions of the young person. The last thing any parent wants is to ask themselves, ‘why wasn’t I more vigilant’, ‘where did I fail to protect her/him’ or even worse, ‘where is she’?!’!
May 20, 2015 at 4:04 am
I use to monitor my friends daughters using chat checker. Sure I caught them doing things that they weren’t supposed to be doing, but I took the fun out of them being teenagers. Let’s face it, most of us would sneak out at night and those of the best times of our lives. I felt like I was reading their personal diary. Sometimes I think we have crossed a line monitor every move children make. Unless you just suck and are unsure of your parental skills. Don’t get me wrong, I do think that some monitoring needs to be put into place in case of an abduction. But this kind of monitoring should be controlled by the police and accessed whenever a parent call the police.
May 20, 2015 at 3:28 pm
(not sure if you’re saying you monitored your friend’s daughters? I only advocate monitoring one’s own children….) I don’t think we should leave it to the police departments to monitor our children, and I think with monitoring in place perhaps there would be fewer abductions as parents would be clued in before something really drastic happens.

You folks are fooling yourselves if you don’t make an effort. Our 13 yo daughter was very trusted and I never even thought to check up on her. Then, on a random check of her IPOD, I found she was sexting with a boy over 18, soliciting many others, trolling the internet with adult like photos on hotornot, instagram, and many other sites. She had promotion software that gets folks to look at her profiles.
No one in the family would believe she was capable of this till I showed photos of her posts and activities I took of the device. You need to check up on your child not matter what your trust level is. She shifted to cloud based links and apps, reinstalled secret accounts for these activities, etc. It is a nightmare and I recommend you get a handle from the start and not be trusting at all.
Our daughter was egged on by her friends. She had horrible friends on facebook who urged her to do all of these things. I read and saw it all. No matter how great your kid is, there are kids out there who will subvert your child quickly. Our daughter did not think it was anything to do with her that her FB friends posted pornography, ethic hate/slurs, graphic images, cursing, threatening, etc. I am not kidding. We have 2 kids and the younger one who is most trusted by everyone in our nuclear and extended family just went haywire.
June 1, 2015 at 8:44 pm
Steve, sorry to hear about your daughter getting caught up in all this. I agree with your statement, even good kids can get caught up in questionable behaviors.

It’s disgusting how all of you want to ignore your child’s feelings or emotions and instead want a totalitarian family (which is very destructive) where the parent must know everything about the child! You keep secrets from your children, you kept secrets from your parents. When parents get all upset with their children for lying or keeping secrets it is because they have to because of your reaction, which will most likely not be pretty. My daughter hides nothing from me because even if I disagree with her I would never judge her and I allow her to do most things she wants to do and she is a very healthy young lady. All of you need parenting lessons.
June 14, 2015 at 9:20 am
I try to not to be so judgmental of other’s parenting styles. I simply offer information that might be useful to parents who are trying to figure these things out. I’m very happy to hear that your daughter is a healthy young lady.

You’re the reason kids are the way they are these days. I guarantee you don’t know the HALF of what your daughter hides from you. Get down off your high horse and start being a real Parent. Not the cool friend you think your daughter needs or wants. You’re clueless and that’s a shame.

Hi Jean, it’s imperative to monitor kids activity. It’s not always the child’s fault, if anyone disagrees they need to remember how paedophiles are so successful grooming kids.
Have you, or anybody, come across any free apps that stay free?

My wife and I recently had a revelation with our soon to be 13 year old daughter. I had recommended to my wife that we put something on daughter’s iphone to monitor usage. She disagreed, and I let it go. Over the weekend I went through her messages to some boy I do not know and saw that she was “cutting” and borderline anorexic and mentioning suicide. Parents, do not assume your children are not doing anything or saying anything you would not allow. It is our job to raise them to sensible adults, and send them on their way. If my daughter had committed suicide, I do not know what my wife and I would have done to survive. I cannot imagine that pain. We will now get her the help she needs, and I will monitor her phone activity. We didn’t have this sort of technology when we were that age. The worst thing we might do is sneak out a window and go to a party or meet up with friends. The entire world is at our kids’ fingertips. We need to help them understand the way the world works, because it is too much for them to process. Good luck to you all and God bless.
July 9, 2015 at 6:33 pm
Sam, thank you so much for your message. It really is so hard for parents to know just what level of monitoring (or any at all) is appropriate, and at what age. I’m so glad your daughter will be getting the help she needs.
July 24, 2015 at 10:54 am
I’m in exactly the same position as Sam N. My sensible, never been home late, clever, smart, 14yo daughter got caught up in this world of peer pressure and ended up in a terrible state. I trusted her totally and when I finally hacked her instagram I was devastated by what I found.
She is totally phoneless at the moment which is fine because she isn’t allowed out. When she’s earned enough trust and we feel she has enough self-respect again to be given some of the freedoms and privileges she’s had taken away I’m absolutely going to monitor her!
July 26, 2015 at 4:21 pm
Sorry to hear your daughter got caught up in a bad situation. I hope you’ve looked around the site at some of the monitoring solutions available…and many more that I haven’t had a chance to write about yet! VISR is one I recently wrote about, and a good one for detecting inappropriate Instagram activity.

Hi Dennis – if he is logged into YouTube with an account, you’d be able to view a history of viewed videos. I have a few articles about YouTube you might want to take a look at. Which apps handle wifi and incognito browsing? My daughter was friended by an adult male on her secret (from parents) fb page. He started sending and requesting graphic inappropriate photos and videos right away. She asked if it was illegal because she was a minor then proceeded to send them. We discovered and stopped it, but months later my husband had a dream and we checked at her school and she had managed to bypass the system and get in on her assigned laptop. It was just in time, because the day before we checked, he asked her for her address to borrow any money she could find to “help him pay his phone bill”. We went before school, so she hadn’t had time to answer him! We have other children at home – he could have been a trafficker! We reported it all to the police
June 3, 2016 at 8:09 pm
Hi Kay, First off, I’m sorry to hear that this happened and glad to hear you reported this to the police! As for the question, some of it will depend on whether you want to block/protect on a phone or on a computer/laptop. Most of the parental controls listed here , when in use, will prevent Incognito browsing. It won’t be allowed at all and you would have the ability to view a history of browsing activity. Most of them also have the ability to block (“blacklist”) certain websites, for example you could block Facebook. Some go even further and allow you to block any FB activity or other activity at certain times of day. Others (such as uKnowKids) can be used to allow Facebook but view activity and be notified of any potential issues. So I would start there and take note of the supported platforms, be it Mac, PC, iOS, Android. My other list of parental controls that cover every device in the home is also worth a look because they can apply settings to all Wifi activity without having to install things on each device, and some can different setting for different family members.

Does anyone know of an iphone app that you can moniter the kids text messages with any pictures that were sent? Also a tracker that can open the camera as well to see where the kid is?
June 25, 2016 at 8:08 am
Hi Michelle – one that comes to mind is uKnowKids . You can monitor text messages on an iPhone, I’m not 100% sure about images that were sent though. TeenSafe can also monitor text messages on iPhone. Both will require that you know your child’s apple ID and password. As for location tracking, you could use the built in feature of iOS together with the “Find my friends” app. ( https://www.bewebsmart.com/ipod-ipad-iphone/location-sharing-ios/ )

Phone sheriff does not do what they say. Only some of the features work at any given time. Others will just stop working with no warning. Tech support does not resolve the problems, IF you can even get a hold of them (usually have to keep emailing back and forth) and then you get a canned response. I’ve unistalled and reinstalled multiple times to no avail. The money has been spent but the monitoring is not functioning properly. Has been extremely frustrating experience.
July 9, 2016 at 10:03 am
Hi Michelle, Thanks for sharing your experience and sorry to hear that you have not been able to get the product to work as it should even after contacting their tech support. I have not done a review of Phone Sherrif personally so don’t have any experience to share with it. I just visited their website and see they’ve updated it, and now include a link to a product called “TeenShield” specifically for iOS devices to monitor without jailbreaking. The TeenShield website looks a lot like the website for TeenSafe, almost as if they copied the design! Looks like a similar solution. uKnowKids is another that monitors iMessage. I have a breakdown of them all here if you haven’t checked it out yet: https://www.bewebsmart.com/parental-controls/comprehensive-list-phones-computers-tablets/

Is there any way for parents to disable the “Discover” part of snapchat? My 13-year old son wants to be on snapchat and so I got my own account to look into it and see how it works. I’m horrified about the articles he would be able to easily access and browse- totally inappropriate (sexual content) I have parental restrictions on every other thing he has on his phone- is there a way to put restrictions on Snapchat?
November 28, 2016 at 7:10 pm
Hi Diane, Excellent question and unfortunately the answer is no. I don’t know of a way to disable the “Discover” part of Snapchat. And I agree with your assessment of the content there! Those headlines are in the same part of the app where someone would go to look at “Stories” from their friends, or see who has viewed their Story. So its likely once they start using the app they would see all those headlines.

iOS 7 How-to: Monitor & track your cellular data usage
- Sep. 25th 2013 1:37 pm PT
Have you ever wondered how much data you should get with your carrier? Do you barely use your data plan but pay for a huge one anyways? Or do you go over data each month with your data plan and have no idea why? New in the iOS 7 Settings application is the ability to track cellular data usage per each app you have installed on your device.
In iOS 6, it shows you how much data you use, but it did not define or described what made up that number. To monitor and track your cellular data usage in iOS 7, first go into Settings.
Then tap on Cellular. If you scroll down a little bit at first you will see your total history. It will show your Call Time and total Cellular Data Usage, just like it did in iOS 6.
If you scroll down further, you will get an alphabetical list of all the apps have use cellular data.
If you scroll all the way down at the bottom, you will see a button called System Services. If you tap on that, it will show you how much cellular data you are using for things like Messaging Services, Push Notifications, Documents & Sync, iTunes Accounts, Siri, Voicemail, Software Updates, Find My iPhone, Diagnostics and Apple ID Services.
The devices gather your statistics until you manually reset them on the device by tapping on the blue Reset Statistics button. If you want to monitor and track your cellular data usage, I would recommend setting up a reoccurring calendar event, or a reminder every thirty days to coincide with your cellular bill so that way you would remember to reset the cellular statistics every thirty days.
