  • Here’s how to track an Android phone, tablet, or smartwatch

    By Simon Hill @iamsimonhill — Posted on July 7, 2018 - 12:00PM 7.7.18 - 12:00PM Share on Facebook Tweet this Share

No matter how cautious you are with your electronic devices, there is a good chance you’ve endured the awful experience of losing a smartphone . Whether it occurs after a raucous night out with friends, or you had the unlucky experience of running into a skilled pickpocket, it’s always a drag to reach for your digital friend only to come up empty.

Luckily for Android users, there are apps and services specifically designed for tracking down and locating lost or stolen smartphones. To help you sift through the sea of available options, we compiled this list of the absolute best methods for finding and retrieving lost Android devices. Let’s take a closer look at how to track an Android phone.

Note: Digital Trends doesn’t condone the use of these phone trackers for anything other than locating a lost or stolen Android phone. While these apps work wonders for finding a wayward phone, it’s never cool to be a creep. Please use sound judgment when employing the following services. You should also be aware that you can’t track your phone unless it’s switched on and connected to a mobile or Wi-Fi network.

    Find My Device

    • Track your phone via GPS
    • Erase your phone remotely
    • Remotely play a sound
    • Lock your phone remotely
    • Works with tablets and smartwatches, too

Google’s Find My Device app is a must-have for Android users and one of our favorite Android apps . If you added a Google Account to your Android device, then Find My Device is automatically turned on. You can check via Settings > Security & lock screen > Device administrators , or Settings > Lock screen and security > Other security settings > Device administrators on a Samsung Galaxy, where there should be a tick next to Find My Device.

The app makes it simple to locate your lost device, all you have to do to get started is download it from the Play Store . After you install the app, it will ask you to log in, and to make sure Location is turned on. You should take a look in Settings > Location , or Settings > Connections > Location on a Samsung Galaxy, and make sure it’s set to High accuracy for best results. Once the app is installed and running, you can locate your device, as long as it’s turned on and connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.

To track your device, go to  in any browser, whether on your computer or another smartphone. If you’re logged into your Google account you can also just type “find my phone” into Google. If your lost device has access to the internet and location is on you’ll be able to locate it. One of the great features here is that you can lock the device and write a message with an accompanying phone number. That way if someone finds or has your device, all they have to do is press the Call Me button on the screen to call the specified phone number. You can also choose to play a sound or erase the phone remotely if you have no other choice.

Remember that if you track your phone using a browser, you will have to log in to your Google account. If you logged in from someone else’s smartphone or desktop browser, then you’ll want to log out of all your accounts when finished. If you leave your account logged in, anyone with access to that computer will be able to track your smartphone. The app only takes a minute to install and set up, and because it’s so easy to use, it should be your first choice for finding a lost Android device.

    Find My Phone

    • See the GPS location of your phone via the app’s built-in map
    • Keep tabs on missing or lost phones with real-time updates
    • Receive navigational assistance from the app when locating a phone
    • Delete any messages from a tracked phone

Family Safety Productions’ app Find My Phone makes it incredibly easy to find lost or stolen Android phones. You can also use the app to track the smartphones of any family member who syncs their phone to the program. When hunting down a lost or stolen phone, the application provides real-time location updates, which constantly change as the phone in question moves. The app also provides accurate GPS directions, and relies on its triangulation algorithm to produce a spot-on location.

The application’s easy-to-use website allows for quick viewing of all synced phones, and also provides the same real-time mapping as the application. Considering that the app is free, Find My  Phone remains one of the best options for locating your Android device if it’s either fallen victim to a long night on the town, or become the object of a thief’s obsession .

    Lost Android

    • Read sent and received SMS messages via your computer
    • Wipe your phone or SD card’s memory remotely
    • Start a flashing screen alarm on the phone
    • Forward any calls to a desired number of your choice
    • Start and stop your device’s Wi-Fi and GPS functions
    • Locate your phone via a GPS or network connection

Lost Android is a little bit different and it can do a lot more than just find your lost Android device. It offers an incredible number of features and benefits, many of which remain exclusive to this impressive app, but before we dig in it’s worth mentioning that some of this functionality doesn’t work with newer versions of Android.

For starters, you have the ability to automatically forward any SMS messages received on your phone to your email inbox, and even have the option of sending SMS messages directly from your computer . Lost Android also allows you to activate a remote-controlled alarm, even if your phone is in “Silent Mode.” Moreover, the app allows you to wipe any content from a lost phone, forward all calls sent to the phone, and produce a pop-up message that lets any would-be thieves know to return the device ASAP.

Like Find My Phone, Lost Android doesn’t cost a dime to download, and the fact it affords its users a laundry list of available benefits makes it an attractive solution to find your phone.

    New Emojis

Android 7.0 introduces additional emojis and emoji-related features including skin tone emojis and support for variation selectors. If your app supports emojis, follow the guidelines below to take advantage of these emoji-related features.

    • Check that a device contains an emoji before inserting it. To check which emojis are present in the system font, use the hasGlyph(String) method.
    • Check that an emoji supports variation selectors. Variation selectors allow you to present certain emojis in color or in black-and-white. On mobile devices, apps should represent emojis in color rather than black-and-white. However, if your app displays emojis inline with text, then it should use the black-and-white variation. To determine whether an emoji has a variation, use the variation selector. For a complete list of characters with variations, review the emoji variation sequences section of the Unicode documentation on variations .
    • Check that an emoji supports skin tone. Android 7.0 allows users to modify the rendered skin tone of emojis to their preference. Keyboard apps should provide visual indications for emojis that have multiple skin tones and should allow users to select the skin tone that they prefer. To determine which system emojis have skin tone modifiers, use the hasGlyph(String) method. You can determine which emojis use skin tones by reading the Unicode documentation .

What You Can Do Right Now

While it’s cool that Google is taking steps to stop apps from spying on you in the background in a future version of Android, there are steps you can take to prevent apps from spying on you right now.

    Check App Permissions

RELATED: How to Manage App Permissions on Android

While you can’t prevent apps from having access to certain permissions only while they’re running in the background, you can control what permissions apps have access to overall .

To find this, jump into the Settings menu, and then choose the “Apps” category (“Apps & Notifications” on Oreo).

    Left: Nougat; Right: Oreo

What you do from here depends on what version of Android your phone is running.

    • Android Nougat:  Tap the Settings button in the upper corner, and then tap “App Permissions.” On Samsung Galaxy devices, you’ll find “App Permissions” in the menu, instead.
    • Android Oreo: Choose “App Permissions” on the “Apps & Notifications” page.

Left to Right: Stock Nougat, Samsung Galaxy (Nougat), and Oreo

Next, tap a permission to see which apps can have access to it. For the sake of this piece, we’ll take a look at the Microphone permission.

As you scroll through the list of apps, ask yourself why each app would need access to the microphone. For example, Instagram needs it when recording videos, so that makes sense. But it may not be as clear for other apps. If something seems questionable to you, revoke access for that app by turning off the toggle to the app’s right.

If an app you disable needs access to the feature in the future, it will request access again. That may give you a better understanding of why the app wants the permissions, and if you should allow it.

Just repeat this process for every permission and your phone will be safer in no time.

Spam Calls: How to Stop RoboCalls on Cell Phone and Land Phone?

Approaches to analyzing mobile app traffic

Ask your mobile app developers what monitoring tool they use when developing the network interactions. The most common answer is “IDE console output”. Yes, it provides all the necessary information for you, and can even be used by your QAs (assuming they know how to build apps locally with the help of IDE :)), though it’s output can look really chaotic when server responses are large: Android Studio output

    Xcode output

And even when requests and responses are displayed on the console, they still may miss some important info, such as custom headers.

We’ve also made a PDF-version of this article.  Download

While this approach can be used with applications you develop, you usually won’t be able to monitor other apps’ traffic. Indeed, there are cases when you have to analyze other applications (for example: when building your own API, analyzing other applications can help you to save time). This is where sniffers come in handy.

Let’s define the first advantage of using sniffers: You get traffic analysis in a convenient and readable format

    Burp Suite

In addition to simply reading network data, there are plenty of situations when you need to manipulate it. I assume you can find a way to inject needed data right into an application while debugging it if you know how to code. However, using sniffers for data manipulation is a relatively easier approach and you can change data without code knowledge. This brings us to the second advantage of using sniffers: Easy data manipulation.
