So it is a new year and your kids and teens have their new shiny Apple mobile devices. Maybe it’s a new iPod touch for the young ones, a fancy new iPad Mini, or the ultra-hot iPhone 6S Plus! Regardless, every new toy brings its set of challenges for parents . One of the most favorite features is, of course, Apple’s proprietary texting tool iMessage – as parents we want to know our kids are using this service safely. Being able to see their iMessages for free from your parent device is very useful!

It allows kids and teens to text one another over WiFi or traditional carriers, as long as each of them both have Apple iOS devices . It is almost impossible to filter out, so parents everywhere are trying to figure out how to control it, or at least, have a way to monitor kids using the Apple iOS iMessage app . Below, we will show you just how easy and for free, any parent can take steps to monitor and police their children’s texting habits.

First, we suggest that you have a conversation with your kids and teens to set the ground rules, expectations, and consequences. Studies have shown that being upfront typically ends up being more productive than to spy clandestinely.

American lawyers are heading into the busiest time of the year for divorce filings . Big Brother is watching your every move — and so is your spouse .

As global positioning systems improve, so do the apps that track your movements, and that’s making it tougher than ever to keep a low profile. Last week, reality TV personality Rob Kardashian and his fiancée Blac Chyna split, with the two sparring on social media over leaked Instagram messages , but they reunited , sharing happy photos and videos on their Snapchat accounts.

Americans have good reason to wonder if there is such a thing as privacy anymore. Last year, two baseball fans reportedly busted a woman for “sexting” a man who was not her husband . After former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden revealed in 2013 that the U.S. government monitors calls, emails and texts, many people might think twice about what they share online. But that same technology is being used for another purpose: “There are a growing number of apps that will spy on your husband or wife and keep tabs on your kids,” says Theodore Claypoole, privacy attorney and co-author of “Privacy in the Age of Big Data: Recognizing Threats, Defending Your Rights, and Protecting Your Family.”

These apps may raise moral and legal questions, too. The most invasive can be downloaded onto a phone and will quietly forward emails, calls and texts. It’s a criminal offense under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1965 to access a computer — including modern computers like tablets and smartphones — without authorization. But if ownership of the smartphone in question is under someone else’s name — say, a spouse, a parent or an employer — it’s a legal gray area, Claypoole says. “That raises the question of whether the user has a reasonable expectation of privacy,” he says. “If you own your husband or wife’s smartphone and you’re paying your child’s phone bill, it could be a moral issue rather than a legal one.”

Apps regularly pop up in divorce cases, experts say. Over 80% of U.S. divorce attorneys say they’ve seen a rise in the number of cases using social networking, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and more than a third of divorce filings contained the word Facebook, according to a 2011 U.K. survey by Divorce Online, a legal services firm. Gary Traystman, a divorce attorney in New London, Conn., says 80% of contested divorce cases involve smartphones and/or computers.

Of course, many tracking apps are designed to serve an innocent purpose: to keep tabs on an ailing parent, to keep children safe from a potential predator, or even to help find a lost or stolen phone, says Adam Levin, co-founder of online security company Identity Theft 911. Trouble is, “people store way too much personal data in their smartphones,” he says. For people who fear snoops, there are apps for that too. Vault Stocks (.99 on Google’s Android) and Best Secret Folder (free on Apple’s iOS) hide pictures and videos in a secret online vault. “The moral of the story is to lock your phone,” says Rick Singer, CEO of GreatApps.com, an app marketing company.

With that in mind, here are five apps that allow you to legally keep track of your friends and family:

Connect

This app for iPhone or iPad can follow your husband, wife, children and even your friends on sites like Facebook FB, +1.56% Twitter TWTR, +4.71% Instagram, Google Contacts GOOG, +0.79%  and LinkedIn US:LNKD Most social contacts are jumbled and split up across multiple devices, platforms and apps, but this app collects them in one place, says Ryan Allis, chairman and co-founder of the app. “Your Connect map has hundreds of your friends on it the first time you use the app,” Allis says. Unlike similar apps like Foursquare, it doesn’t use virtual check-ins, which can prompt users to activate their location settings (many people don’t realize that when they turn on location settings on their phone, location information can be embedded in shared photographs and status updates too). What’s more, the other person doesn’t need to have Connect installed or to accept an invitation from the app.

Find My Friends

Find My Friends for iPhone and Android allows you to keep up to speed on when your spouse leaves work, your child leaves school or even when a visiting friend arrives at the airport. “Friends who share their locations with you appear on a map so you can quickly see where they are and what they’re up to,” according to the app’s official site. The app syncs with phone contacts and maps on the iPhone. Users can also select what other Find My Friends users they want to interact with on their network. Not to be confused with Find My iPhone (free on iOS), which will give the location of a lost or stolen phone via Apple Maps on a map and also works for iPod, iPad Touch.

Trick or Tracker 3.0

Many parents want to keep track of their kids — and not just on Halloween. Wayne Irving, a father of four and the president and CEO of Laguna Niguel, Calif.-based technology company Iconosys, has a novel solution. Trick or Tracker can be used by up to seven family members at one time. The app must be downloaded on both parties’ smartphones — with their permission, of course. It can send text alerts when a child has traveled out of a previously agreed area, and it has a latchkey-kid feature that can ping a parent when a child arrives home. It tracks the phone using the geo-location data contained in text messages and sends the person’s location every 15 minutes. Irving says it could also be used to track a child in the unlikely event of an abduction, although some online reviewers have complained about its accuracy. Originally .99 when launched in 2013, it’s now free.

Phone Tracker

Phone Tracker is marketed to families with busy schedules and employers who want to track employees during work hours. It combines mapping and GPS technology to let you track your phone plus one other for free on Android and iPhone (follow 10 users with a 99-cent upgrade). The app doesn’t have to be open to work, and it can locate another person’s movement within the previous 24 hours and within 30 feet (10 meters). It can be programmed to log locations every two to 60 minutes. To follow another person, they must use the app too. A similar app — Glympse — free on Android and iOS — shares estimated arrival times and even the speed your spouse is traveling at. While the app is free, it has also received mixed reviews on the iTunes store.

AccuTracking

Pitched for GPS vehicle tracking for companies and a way for parents to keep a tag on their children, AccuTracking has been around for over a decade even before the advent of Google Maps. “Our vision is to provide low-cost and simple to use applications that enable the tracking of any number of targets wherever and whenever the user chooses,” the company states. “Knowing where your vehicles, employees and physical assets are in real-time on your desktop computer is a valuable management and cost-control tool.” It costs .99 a month. The app is downloadable through the phone’s web browsers. Singer advises caution when downloading software onto your phone that is not approved; Apple’s App Store does not support AccuTracking. “Apple has done an exceptional job protecting its phones,” he says. “Once you jailbreak the phone, all bets are off.”

Waiting for that response can be painful, especially if you’re not even sure the person has seen your text. But there is a way. Click here to find out if the recipient has read your text messages .

Documenting Text Messages for Trial or Legal Matters

Jay W. May 20, 2018 at 12:00 PM Categories: iPhone | View Comments

Attorneys and clients often find themselves needing to accurately document and print text messages for court or legal proceedings. Each year there are millions more legal cases where text messages are being used as evidence in a trial and also by lawyers during discovery.

Digital marketing firm eMarketer estimates that by the end of 2017 over 1.82 billion consumers will be using mobile messaging apps on all platforms . That’s a lot of messages sent via mobile devices! This includes iOS, Android, and also popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Viber, Line, and WeChat. With text messaging and messaging apps now solidified as one of the world’s most popular forms of daily communication, the need to document and preserve text / sms messages for evidence in court has increased dramatically.

What is the best way to document and print out my messages for a court case or legal proceeding?

No matter how you preserve text messages for evidence, you'll want to make sure that the records have all of the information necessary for them to be admissible in court. Consult a lawyer for the specifics in your region about what information is required. For most legal matters the following details should be visible in your text message documentation:

  • The date and time of the messages.
  • The real contact information for the other party or parties in the text message conversation. For SMS this is a phone number. For MMS or iMessages, this is either a phone number or an email address.

Whether you are a lawyer, law enforcement official, or simply someone who has a pending court case or legal matter, there are several solutions for saving and printing text messages so that you can preserve evidence from your mobile phone's sms message history.

iPhone

For iPhone / iPad / iTouch, we recommend using Decipher TextMessage to save and print out your text messages for court. Decipher TextMessage is already a trusted and widely used program by lawyers and law enforcement officials for preserving any messaging data in a format that will hold up in a legal environment. Features include:

  • The software has a free trial so you can try it out without spending any money.
  • Text messages are saved with a time / date stamp and by contact ensuring that your documentation will be upheld in a legal setting.
  • Decipher TextMessage presents your iPhone text messages and iMessages in a similar format as seen on the iPhone. (Here are links to specific instructions about printing iPhone text messages and exporting iPhone text messages to a PDF file .)
  • The software saves your text messages locally on your computer. None of your data is accessible by anyone but yourself and nothing is stored in the cloud.
  • Decipher TextMessage also recovers deleted iPhone text messages and iMessages , a feature that is useful for attorneys, police officers, or governmental agencies for evidence. ( Click here for our guide about recovering deleted text messages. )
  • You don't always need the iPhone to save your data. The software can access the data from an iTunes backup on any Windows or Mac computer.
  • Depending on the formatting your jurisdiction requires for text message transcripts, you can turn on an option to show the iPhone contact information on every individual message .
  • Decipher TextMessage allows for combining text message conversations from more than one contact/group as well as selecting only a certain period of time depending on your needs.

iPhone Screenshots

Another way to print out your iPhone text messages is by taking screenshots of each text message screen on your device. To take a screenshot you press the "Home" and "Sleep/Wake" button to capture what is on your iPhone screen. Pros and cons of using the screenshot method include:

  • Screenshots are quick and easy (and free!) if you only have a few text messages.
  • One drawback of using the screenshot method is that it is time consuming. If you have lots of messages you will need to screenshot each individual screen and organize the images into a text message transcript manually.
  • If you're required to show the time on every message, you'll need to slide left on the Messages app screen to reveal each message time. It's hard to do that and press the screenshot buttons, and cuts off some of the message text.
  • If you don't have the iPhone in your possession, there is no way to use the screenshot method.

Android

There are several popular programs available for saving text messages from an Android device to your computer Some are free and some can be purchased for a fee in the Google Play Store. One popular app is SMS Backup + . The program stores texts in your Gmail account and lets you access them from any web browser.

  • The app is free so you can try it out without spending any money.
  • Printing out the text messages from any web browser is convenient and easy.
  • It requires that you have a Gmail account. If you don't, you can simply register for one and then be up and running with the application within minutes.

Android Screenshots

To take a screenshot of any Android device is fairy simple, however the commands are different depending on your specific device.

  • The first thing to try is pressing down the "sleep / wake" button and also the "volume down" button at the same time. If you see your screen "flash" then you have successfully taken a screenshot.
  • For Galaxy devices and other Android phones that have a "home" button, try holding down the home button and the power button simultaneously until you see the screen flash.
  • After taking a screenshot the image will then appear in the photo gallery app on your device. Simply look for the screenshot photo album and locate the image you just captured. You can then send, save, or share the screenshot depending on what is best for your needs.

Whether your device is an iPhone or an Android, we hope these tips for preserving and saving your text messages for court or a legal issue have been helpful. Remember to back up your mobile data on a regular basis so that all your important information is safe and secure. Also, when gathering text message documentation as evidence, consult with a lawyer in your local area if you have any questions or concerns.

Definitely leave us a comment (or contact us via email ) if you're interested in this, so we can followup/reply! (Leaving a comment also let's us know how many people are interested in this topic.) Be sure to mention the specific kind of feature phone from which you want to document sms/mms messages; the techniques and details vary depending on the phone manufacturer/operating system.

Free way to track GPS, phone calls, text messages and web activity on a phone

By Komando Staff, Komando.com March 7th, 2018 100,720100.7k Syda Productions | Dreamstime

Keeping your children and grandchildren safe is priority one. Thanks to smartphones, tablets and the internet, there are many potential threats to them that you might not see coming. They could be using one of these dangerous apps  or be in contact with an online predator and you wouldn't know.

That is why I encourage parents to talk to kids before they use technology and set clear rules. You should also be regularly checking their gadgets for dangerous apps and conversations, as well as monitoring their social media accounts.

Of course, constant monitoring can be a problem.

Ideally, you want to be able to peek in on what your children are doing no matter where they are. There are several companies that make remote spy software, such as mSpy, WebWatcher and more .

However, those will set you back or more for the spying app. I've found a spying app that's free and works on up to five phones, so you can keep tabs on all your kids or grandkids.

The free app is called Phone Tracker from Spy Phone Labs, and it gives you detailed information about any phone or tablet you put it on. We have a link for you to download it at the end of this post.

Here's a video that tells you more about it.

The Phone Tracker app uses GPS to track a phone's location, gives you a full log of all calls sent and received, and even shows you text messages and web activity. This information is available online after you create a free account. Not bad for a free app that isn't too difficult to install.

Once it's installed, open the app, set up an account name and password, give the phone a nickname and you're done.

To monitor multiple gadgets with the same account, just install the app on each gadget to monitor and use the same account name and password you used for the first one. They'll all show up when you log in online at  Phone Tracker . Give it about 30 minutes after installing the app for the data to start appearing.

Warning: The Phone Tracker website has several confusing ads at the top of the page. The button you want to press on the home page is the blue " Login " button. On the login page, enter your username and password and click the gray "Log in" button. You can also scroll down for the answers to frequently asked questions.

Phone Tracker is free and has versions available for both Android and Apple. However, installing spy apps in iOS is no picnic.

Bonus tip: iPhones running iOS 11 can continuously send location information to another iPhone, iPad or Mac computer. On the phone you wish to track, go to Messages >> find the thread of messages they've had with you. In the upper-right corner, touch " Information " icon, which looks like a lower-cased I. Tap, " Send My Current Location " to instantly send a map of the phone's current location, one time only. Or just below it, " Share My Location ," which will continuously send the phone's location to your Apple gadget. To see the phone's location, go to your Messages app and find your child's contact. Tap the " Information " icon and a map will display the phone's location. Note that your child can easily turn off this location sharing anytime, but perhaps a firm conversation about the consequences of doing so might encourage him or her to leave it on. ( Note : These features will also work for your Apple gadgets that are running iOS 10.)

To get around legal problems, Phone Tracker puts an icon on the gadget's home screen and fires off a notification every 12 hours telling the person they're being monitored.

That's actually a good thing in most situations, but kids are resourceful. If they know they're being watched, they can find ways around the app. So, either tell them you're putting it on there and you expect them to leave it alone or go for a paid app that's completely hidden.

To install the app, you will need access to the phone or tablet. Then go to Google Play or iTunes, find the Phone Tracker app and tap "Install."
