Plan B: Use Google Timeline to find your iPhone

Note: This method only works if you have location reporting and location history enabled on your iPhone (or iPad).

You’re probably aware, that Apple and Google like to gather information about all sorts of things, including your location. Although this is an invasion of your privacy and some people intentionally disable location services on their devices, it can be very helpful when you lose your phone.

Google’s Timeline (former Location History) maps out all location data that has been collection from your iPhone. Yes, Google doesn’t only store all that location data of yours, it also makes it accessible in a very good looking interface.

Basically, you can see where you’ve been on a map. Using this tool, you can see where your lost phone was located the last time it sent its location data to Google. In case your iPhone is still on and is connected to the web, it will continue sending its location so you can see exactly where it is and go get it back. Even if it the battery is dead, you can still see its last reported location.

To see your location history do the following:

  1. Visit
  2. Select today’s date in the top left side of the screen (or click the “Today” button).
  3. Look at the timeline on the left side and scroll to its end to find the last reported location of your iPhone. You can also check all recorded points in the map. Make sure to check the time stamps so that you don’t just know the last location but also when your phone was last connected to Google.
  4. Before you jump up to get it. Try to use the location data to figure out if your iPhone is simply lying somewhere waiting to be picked up, or if it’s moving. If it isn’t staying put, you should contact the authorities and get them to help you retrieve your (apparently) stolen device. I don’t recommend going after a thief alone. Who knows what kind of person took your phone..

Find an iPhone which is off or offline

If you hadn't noticed that your phone was missing and you suspect that the battery has now died or someone may have turned your iPhone off, there may still be a way to find it thanks to the Send Last Location feature mentioned above.

There is an option to turn on Send Last Location in Find My iPhone. With this turned the last known location of your iPhone will be stored for 24 hours after the battery runs out. This isn't on by default but when you open Find My iPhone on your iPhone you will see an alert asking you to enable it.

If you have Send Last Location enabled you will be able to see where your iPhone was when it ran out of battery or was turned off. Which will at least indicate if it was in your office, in the pub you went to after work, or somewhere else entirely (which may indicate it was stolen, or that you left it in the back of a cab/on the train).

Here's how to turn on Send Last Location:

  1. Tap Settings > [Your name]
  2. Tap Find My iPhone.
  3. Ensure Find My iPhone is set to On.
  4. Set Send Last Location to On.

Right now it isn't possible to locate an iPhone or iPad that is turned off, however, according to a report by CNBC in November 2016, Apple has patented technology that would allow a stolen or lost iPhone to be switched on remotely and transmit location information to its owner through the Find My iPhone feature.

We're not sure when or if this feature will be employed by Apple in their current or next generation iPhones, but we will be sure to update this article if we learn more.

Method 1 Using Find My iPhone

  1. 1 Open Settings. It's a gray app that contains gears (⚙️) and is typically located on your home screen.
  2. 2 Tap your Apple ID. It's the section at the top of the menu that contains your name and image if you've added one.
    • If you are not signed in, tap Sign in to (Your Device) , enter your Apple ID and password, then tap Sign In .
    • If you are running an older version of iOS, you may not need to do this step.
  3. 3 Tap iCloud. It's in the second section of the menu.
  4. 4 Scroll down and tap Find My iPhone. It's near the bottom of the "APPS USING ICLOUD" section of the menu.
  5. 5 Slide "Find My iPhone" to the "On" position. It will turn green. This feature enables you to find your iPhone's location using another device.
  6. 6 Slide "Send Last Location" to the "On" position. Now your iPhone will send its location to Apple when the battery is critically low, just before it powers off.
  7. 7 Open Find My iPhone on another device. Do so by launching the app on a mobile device or going to iCloud in a web browser .
  8. 8 Sign in with your Apple ID. Use the Apple ID and password with which you signed into your iPhone.
    • If the app is on a device that belongs to another person, you may need to tap Sign Out in the upper-right corner of the app screen in order to sign in with your own Apple ID.
  9. 9 Tap your iPhone. It should appear in a list of devices below the map; it's location will be displayed on the map, which will zoom in when you select your iPhone.
    • If the phone has been powered off, or the battery has died, it will show you the last known location of your phone, but will not be able to show you the current address.
  10. 10 Tap Actions. It's at the bottom-center of the screen.
  11. 11 Tap Play Sound. It's in the bottom-left corner of the screen. If your iPhone is nearby, it will play a sound to help you locate it.
  12. 12 Tap Lost Mode. It's at the bottom-center of the screen. Use this option if your iPhone is lost in a place where it could be found by someone else or if you think it's been stolen.
    • Enter an unlock code for your phone. Use a random number set that's not tied to you: no SSN, no birthdate, driver's license number, or anything that is personal.
    • Send a message and contact phone number that will be displayed on your screen.
    • If your iPhone is online, it will immediately lock and cannot be reset without the lock code. You'll be able to see your phone's current location, as well as any changes in location.
    • If your phone is offline, it will lock immediately on power-up. You'll receive an email notification and will be able to track your phone's position.
  13. 13 Tap Erase iPhone. It's in the lower-right corner of the screen. Use this option if you're concerned that you may not recover your iPhone or that your personal information may be compromised.
    • This action erases all the data on your iPhone, which also means that you'll no longer be able to use Find My iPhone to locate your device.
    • Regularly back up your iPhone to iCloud or iTunes in case you ever need to restore erased data.

    Share music with Home Sharing

If you have two iPhones and want to simply play the music from one iPhone on another (rather than saving the files on the new device), it's best to use Home Sharing. Follow these steps to set up and use Home Sharing:

    1. On the iPhone with the music, tap Settings > Music.
    2. Scroll down to find Home Sharing.
    3. Enter your Apple ID and Password and tap Done.
    4. Repeat this process on the iPhone you want to listen to music on.
    5. Open the Music app on the iPhone you want to listen to music on.
    6. If you don't use Apple Music , tap More > Shared and tap the Library you want to listen to. However if you do use Apple Music , it's a slightly different process. Simply tap 'My Music', then tap 'Songs' or 'Albums' (depending on how you've organised your library) and select Home Sharing.

It normally takes a few minutes for the music library to load into the iPhone, but you can now stream music from one iPhone to another. What you can't do with this method, however, is permanently copy the music from one iPhone to another, as this method only works when both iPhones are on the same Wi-Fi network.
